Owner of Local Restaurant Arrested

Clementine C. Sherrell, owner of Sandy Bottoms Bar & Grill LLC in Crawfordville, has been arrested, the Florida Department of Revenue announced.

Ms. Sherrell, 49, who also lives in Crawfordville, was arrested by the Wakulla County Sheriff ‘s Office on February 16, 2011 on felony and misdemeanor charges relating to failure to file six consecutive returns and refusal to file returns and pay taxes. If convicted, she faces up to 5 years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines, as well as payment of investigative costs.

According to Revenue Department investigators, Ms. Sherrell collected tax from customers at her business. However, during various periods in 2008 and 2010, she failed to file and pay tax returns as required by Florida law. The closed business is located at 885 Woodville Highway in Crawfordville.

"Most Florida businesses do an excellent job of meeting the state's requirements for collecting and submitting sales tax, which pays for services Floridians need," said Lisa Vickers, Executive Director, Florida Department of Revenue. "Individuals who consistently fail to submit tax returns gain an unfair financial advantage over honest businesses that follow the law. It's our job to ensure that Florida’s tax laws are administered fairly."
