Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Information

Key Provisions of Executive Order

On July 21, 2010, Governor Charlie Crist issued Executive Order 10-169 authorizing property appraisers to provide interim assessments of properties affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster.  Property appraisers in the 26 counties (Executive Order 10-132) under the current state of emergency are granted authorization to provide an interim assessment of any affected properties to substantiate claims against BP or other responsible parties. The magnitude of this event is historic, and its scope presently cannot be determined.

Important points of the executive order are:

  • This order will not affect 2010 property assessments or taxes.
  • Property appraisers are authorized, but not required, to provide interim assessments for affected properties after the oil spill affected that county in 2010.
  • Interim assessments are only to substantiate claims with BP and other responsible parties.
  • Interim assessments may be provided for private and public property.
