Notice of Proposed Property Taxes: Recent Law Changes

The 2009 Florida Legislature substantially revised the requirements in s. 200.069, F.S., for the Notice of Proposed Property Taxes mailed to all taxpayers each year in August. Property appraisers should be aware that the Notice of Proposed Property Taxes used in prior years must be revised for 2010. Report on the Effect of Recent Changes in Law on the Notice of Proposed Property Taxes
(January 30, 2009)
The Department of Revenue was required by section 15, Chapter 2008-173, Laws of Florida, to submit a report to the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives on the effect of recent law changes on the Notice of Proposed Property Taxes as specified in s. 200.069, Florida Statutes. The report examines the consistency, completeness, and accuracy of the information provided to taxpayers in light of recently enacted exemptions from property tax and assessment increase limitations.

Addendum to the Report on the Effect of Recent Changes in Law on The Notice of Proposed Property Taxes (December 16, 2009)
The Addendum to the January 2009 report provides additional information and feedback received from property appraisers and local governments regarding the newly enacted requirements for the Notice format.

PTO Bulletin 09-31: Alternative Form Requests for Form DR-474 – Notice of Proposed Property Taxes (December 21, 2009)
While the Department is proceeding with the rule promulgation process, it is anticipated that many counties will request the approval of an alternative form. Pursuant to s. 200.069, F.S., any alternative form must conform to the substantive content of the form prescribed in statute and must be approved in writing by the Department. Property appraisers should be aware that the Notice of Proposed Property Taxes used in prior years must be revised for 2010.

Rule Promulgation Process: DR-474 – Notice of Proposed Property Taxes
The Department is currently in the rule promulgation process for adopting a revised Form DR-474 – Notice of Proposed Property Taxes. Draft forms will be posted as they become available.
