FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT REFUNDS

1.  I received a letter that says my refund is being reduced by billings that aren't valid. What can I do?

The Florida Department of Revenue will offset any refund credit amount with any debit or obligation believed to be owed by the taxpayer.  Call the Receivables Section at 850 488-8650 within 10 days after the date of the letter.  Someone in the Receivables Section will work with you to determine what is actually due, if anything, and correct the offset.

2.  I received my refund check, but I lost it or it was destroyed. How can I get a replacement check?

To replace a lost, stolen or destroyed refund check, please contact the Refund section at 850 488-8937 to request an Affidavit for Duplicate warrant.  Complete two copies of the form, have them notarized and send them to:

    Florida Department of Revenue
    Refunds Process
    Attn: Vouching Section
    P.O. Box 6470
    Tallahassee, Fl 32314-6470
The affidavits will be forwarded to the State Comptroller's Office, who verifies that the refund is still outstanding and then issues a replacement check.

3.  I have a refund check that is over 12 months old and has expired.  How can I get my money?

Contact the Department of Banking and Finance, Bureau of Unclaimed Property.  If you are calling from Florida dial 1-888-258-2253.  If you are calling from outside of Florida dial 850 488-7777.  They will give you instructions on how to proceed with your claim.

4.  I received a refund check, but I already have taken a line item credit on my tax return.  What should I do?

Please write the word CANCEL or VOID across the entire face of the check and send it back to Florida Department of Revenue, Refunds Process Vouching Unit, P.O. Box 6470, Tallahassee, Fl 32314-6470.  Include a brief note on why you are returning the refund and what month you took the credit.

5.  My refund check says "DO NOT CASH." Why?

Each refund check comes with a white remittance advice attachment, which gives information about the refund you have received.  The "DO NOT CASH" is for this attachment only and should be retained for your records.  The pink portion is the actual check and should be separated from the attachment.

6.  How long does it take to process my refund?

Your refund claim will be processed within 90 days if the application is complete. To be considered complete, all documentation needed to substantiate the refund claim must accompany the application.
